The Foresight Institute has announced that the winner of the 2013 Distinguished Student Award is Jonathan C. Barnes, a PhD student with Professor Fraser Stoddart in the Chemistry Department at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. This selection marks the second time a Northwestern graduate student has been chosen for the Foresight Distinguished Student Award in Nanotechnology in as many years.
Jonathan's research capitalizes on expanding the radical-radical and donor-acceptor molecular recognition processes of viologens in order to develop artificial molecular machines, organic-based magnetic materials and devices, and hosts for environmental pollutants on the nanometer scale. His work has been published in leading scientific journals such as Science, Nature Chemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and ACS Nano and has been highlighted in scientific reporting outlets such as Chemical & Engineering News and RSC's Chemistry World. Jonathan's current research efforts are focused on the self-assembly of host-guest complexes consisting of fullerene for potential use in photovoltaics, as well as radical-based integrated materials that may function as building blocks for the construction of molecular electronic devices.
The Foresight Distinguished Student Award was established in 1997, and is given to a college student or graduate student whose work is notable in the field of nanotechnology. The award includes a $1,000 prize, and an expenses-paid trip to the 2014 Foresight Conference, to be held February 7-9, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Cabana Hotel, Palo Alto, CA USA.

Special consideration will be given to submissions clearly leading toward the construction of a general-purpose molecular assembler. Applicants wishing further information on the field of the prize are referred to the book Nanosystems: Molecular Machinery, Manufacturing, and Computation (Wiley Interscience, 1992).
The Foresight Institute Distinguished Student Award was established in 1997 and institutionalizes the first grant made in 1996 by Foresight to John M. Michelsen, a University of California at Irvine chemistry student.
