Edward Chang

Edward F. Chang is a Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where he holds the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Chair. He also co-directs the Center for Neural Engineering and Prostheses, a collaboration between UCSF and UC Berkeley.

He earned his B.A. in Chemistry from Amherst College in 1997 and his M.D. from UCSF in 2004, where he completed his neurosurgical residency in 2010. He also conducted postdoctoral research in cognitive neuroscience at UC Berkeley.

His pioneering research focuses on the neural mechanisms of speech, brain mapping, neuroprosthetics, and brain–computer interfaces. His team has developed technologies that translate brain activity into speech, helping restore communication for people with severe paralysis.

His honors include the Blavatnik National Award in Life Sciences (2015), election to the National Academy of Medicine (2020) and National Academy of Sciences (2025), and the Gruber Neuroscience Prize (2025).
