Evolution of Communication Under Libertarian and Utilitarian Governing Systems

Artificial intelligence can be used to simulate social phenomena. In this respect, a branch of artificial intelligence, called multi-agent reinforcement learning, is one of the most suitable tools to generate a realistic picture of micro and macro foundations of social processes. In this talk, I present my three open source projects in this area as extensions of the AI-Economist, a recently developed multi-agent reinforcement learning framework by Salesforce devised for mechanism design. In the first project, I extend the AI-Economist to study the evolution of morality, prosperity, and equality under libertarian/utilitarian and inclusive/extractive governing systems/institutions. In the second project, I extend the AI-Economist to simulate the effects of environmental resources and governing institutions on the long-term economic development in a region. In the third project, I extend the AI-Economist by including communication and teaching to measure the effects of governing systems on the language alignment in a society. Finally, I will briefly talk about my ongoing and future projects. I believe still we are far from a realistic social simulation which is able to predict the future of a society. My projects are small steps in this direction, though there is so much work to do.
