Kathleen Finlinson

I’m focused on reducing existential risk from advanced artificial intelligence. I contribute by forecasting progress in AI capabilities. This helps AI alignment researchers and policymakers make strategic decisions.

I’m also an executive coach for founders & leaders at high-impact organizations in AI policy, economic policy, animal rights law, and food technologies.

Mathematical Modeling: I apply a wide variety of modeling tools to solve problems with data. I have expertise in time series analysis, neural nets, computer vision, Bayesian inference, dynamical systems, and network science. I have worked on problems in cancer genomics, computer vision, recommender systems, and climate science.

Research Analyst: I provide decision support by writing clear, detailed reports that get to the heart of the matter. My reports synthesize knowledge from many sources including my original research. I enjoy thinking at a high level to understand the most important factors and the most important questions.

Artificial Intelligence: I think about how humans solve problems, and try to get computers to imitate this. I’m interested in better understanding the human brain, to simulate it. I want to make sure that when powerful AI is created in the future, it is beneficial to humans.

Executive Coaching: I work with mission-driven leaders to improve their emotional fluency, decision-making, and the culture of their teams. My coaching style incorporates mindfulness, somatic inquiry, Internal Family Systems, Gendlin’s Focusing, non-violent communication, and authentic relating. I work primarily in tech and effective altruism, after years of experience in these fields.
