Alfie Lamerton

I’m an early stage AI safety researcher building Formation Research, an organisation focusing on lock-in risks from AI systems. As a researcher, I am interested in AI-enabled totalitarianism, authoritarianism, coups, and power concentration, and governance-informed solutions for these problems leveraging technical methods of verification and cooperation. I think AI is a key technology in the potential manifestation of a more extreme version of pre-existing social and political phenomena like totalitarianism, authoritarianism, coups, and power concentration. AI could make these possible situations much worse, so I am researching governance-informed technical methods for designing and governing AI systems in a way that reduces these amplification risks. The core aptitudes I am focusing on building at present are research (computer science), engineering (software and machine learning), and entrepreneurship. I’m open to discussing projects related to machine learning and software engineering, technical AI safety and governance research, and entrepreneurship.
