Surya Ganguli is an Associate Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University, with additional appointments in Neurobiology, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. He is also Associate Director and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), where he leads research connecting neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and theoretical physics.

He earned three B.S. degrees in Physics, Mathematics, and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, along with an M.Eng. from MIT in 1998. He completed his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004, followed by postdoctoral research in theoretical neuroscience at UCSF.

His pioneering research focuses on understanding how biological and artificial neural networks learn, process information, and generate complex behaviors. He has also conducted research at Google Brain and Meta AI. His honors include a Sloan Research Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, the Simons Investigator Award, the Schmidt Science Polymath Award (2023), and the Schmidt AI2050 Senior Fellowship (2025).
