This is an abstract for a presentation given at the
11th Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology

It is known, that Fe in the organism participates in the regulation of peroxide oxidation of lipids at the initiatial stages of branching and breakage of free - radical chains of oxidizing lipids. The regulation of the level of peroxide oxidation of lipids in cells is carried out by a system of natural antioxidants and enzymes.

Based on the facts stated above, and also the fact that nano disperse powder of iron dissolves and penetrates into tissues of the organism slowly, we carried out research to study the influence of nano disperse powder of iron [NDP of iron] applied in biotic doses into the organism of rats, on the intensity of peroxide oxidation of lipids, and on the level of natural antioxidants.

Metals in the organism, can render a complex influence on the system of regulation, especially, in the form of nano disperse powder of iron which possesses a prolongation effect.

Our researches showed that nano disperse powder of iron initially stimulates peroxide oxidation of lipids in the liver during the first hours after introduction. The changes in the contents of the products of peroxide oxidation of lipids carries an oscillatory character in time with amplitude from 20% to 50%. Fluctuations in the level of natural antioxidants in the liver of rats was observed after applying NDP of iron in biotic doses. A decrease in the quantity of natural antioxidants during the first hour was observed.

The influence NDP of iron on the system of natural antioxidants reflects not only on the total quantity of natural antioxidants, but also on their efficiency. After introducing NDP of iron the level of antiradical activity of lipids did not differ from the control and was equal to (2,0±0,3) × 106 l/mol per sec. NDP of iron in the organism does not influence the qualitative contents of natural antioxidants, but change their quantity. A decrease in the ability of lipids to slow down the speed of oxidation of model systems in the early stages was observed after introducing NDP of iron. The introduction of NDP of iron promotes fluctuations of the general content of both separate fractions of phospho- and neutral lipids in the liver.

Hence, the introduction NDP of iron into the organism of rats in biotic doses results in a change in the basic systems of regulation of peroxide oxidation of lipids in the liver. The changes in the mechanism of homeostasis of iron which is connected to the prolonging effect of NDP of iron, are directly connected to the function of regulating the system of peroxide oxidation of lipids which in its turn supports an optimum level of antioxidants in the organism. The application of nano disperse powder of iron stimulates both systems without infringing on the regulatory connections among them and inside each system. Nano disperse powder of iron possibly influences enzyme and cell activity.
