Self-assembled particle-based nanosystems for electronic and optical devices

Nanoparticles are valuable building blocks for near-term nanotechnology. Their size produces opportunities for tuning of their electronic and optical properties as well as their interactions with other molecules. Herein we decribe the rational design and synthesis of particle-based nanostructures, and demonstrate how their geometric arrangement and surface chemistry can affect their optical and electronic behavior. Enhanced non-linear optical scattering is produced from non-centrosymmetric nanostructures of particles. Alternatively, a single-electron transistor (SET) fabricated from a single nanoparticle exhibit chemically gated transport.
