Photochromic properties of diarylethens containing in PMMA nanoparticles

Molecules with reversible photochromism have attracted much attention due to their application potential as rewritable optical recording media. However, the lacks of reversibility have limited the photochromic molecules in practical application. Recently, some diarylethenes have been reported to exhibit high fatigue resistance in the single crystalline phase. To make such high fatigue resistance in the single crystalline phase more practical we have tried to obtain core-shell structured nanoparticle (<100 nm) in which the core is composed of crystalline diarylethenes. Nanoparticles were obtained by emulsion polymerization of MMA. The dimension of core and shell size has been controlled by optimization of polymerization conditions. We have qualitatively observed reversible photochromism from the nanoparticles and shifts in absorption and emission spectra. Experimental details of the preparation, detailed structures, and quantitative fatigue characteristics of PMMA nanoparticles will be presented.
