Electrical Conductivity of Self-Assembled Metallic DNA Nanowires

We report on successful measurements of the electrical conductivity of metallised deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) molecules forming nanowires for applications in future nanoelectronics. The DNA metallisation was performed using gold nanoparticles and a novel self-assembly approach. Linear ohmic behaviour and resistance values in the range 2 to 5 kOhm for single wires have been measured at 300 K. At high bias currents, clear effects of structural changes due to electromigration and overheating have been obtained.

The experimental results will be compared with the predictions based on numerical model simulations, which take into account special structural and electronic features of the nanowires.
