Nanotechnology: Making the case for state involvement

Jack Uldrich*

State of Minnesota (Government)

This is an abstract for a presentation given at the
Ninth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology.
There will be a link from here to the full article when it is available on the web.

California, New York and Illinois have already made substantial commitments to invest in nanotechnology in the past year. Other states are considering doing the same. Unfortunately, proponents of nanotechnology have had a difficult time conveying the potential of the emerging field of nanoscience to the average person -- especially a busy legislator. The purpose of this talk/paper is to help technical people in the field of nanotechnology quickly and accurately explain to public policy-makers why individual states should be investing in nanotechnology. The talk will outline the seven broad factors driving nanotechnology, recent positive developments in the field and the vast potential of nanotechnology. The author will also outline the strategic components of the plan that he is currently sheparding through the legislature in Minnesota.
