In this scene, respirocytes ā artificial red cells ā have just been injected into the bloodstream of a smoke inhalation victim who is suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Here, the respirocytes are passing through an arterial branch on their way to the capillary bed, where they will release their store of oxygen in the patient’s tissues and help keep the victim alive. This image is taken from a 1:06 minute animation produced by Phlesch Bubble for Thomas Lucas Productions’ PBS documentary program “Beyond Human”, which originally aired nationwide in the U.S. on 15 May 2001.
