Hi! I am Ross Gruetzemacher and I am an Assistant Professor of Business Analytics at Wichita State University, a Senior Game Master for the strategic AI role-play game Intelligence Rising, and a Research Affiliate at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge. I have a PhD in management (business analytics) from Auburn University as well as an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in computational fluid dynamics. Prior to my PhD I spent a year working as a data scientist and I really enjoy big data analytics and advanced machine learning techniques. My primary research interests are in forecasting/foresight, decision making and strategy with a focus on artificial intelligence. This involves applied deep learning research as well as research on applications of natural language processing (NLP) and the implications of advanced NLP for organizations and society. My forecasting focuses on judgmental forecasting and foresight techniques, and their use for forecasting AI progress. I am particularly interested in novel methods for eliciting more accurate forecasts and greater logical coherence of forecast rationales. I enjoy teaching courses in business analytics and I have developed and taught graduate and undergraduate courses on AI and advanced analytics. I am currently teaching a introductory course on data mining and machine learning at Wichita State this semester. I am also an effective altruist, and I strive to focus my research on topics that can have the greatest impact on humanity’s long-term future, which, given my skills, involves mitigating risk from advanced AI and ensuring the development of safe and beneficial transformative and radically transformative AI. In my free time I enjoy skiing, climbing, mountaineering, tennis, golf, running, traveling with my wife, and playing with my 10-year old dog Cuda.
