I just received two copies of a beautiful brochure from the California NanoSystems Institute describing the new nanotechnology facility they’re building at UCLA, opening informally this fall and formally on September 7-9, 2007 (there will also be one at UCSB). They’re looking for sponsorship. My first thought was, boy do they have the wrong list, but then I realized I could give them a hand here on Nanodot:
In the fall of 2006, the CNSI will open a new 188,000 square foot, world-class research facility on the UCLA campus…The seven-story structure will house state-of-the-art shared Core Research Laboratories including the Electron Imaging Center of Nanomachines, Advanced Light Microscopy/Spectroscopy, Nano and Pico Characterization, Coherent Imaging, Quantum Information Research, Class 100 and Class 1000 Clean Rooms (including 2 Class 1000 Clean Rooms dedicated to nanobio research), the Macro-Scale Small Animal Imaging Facility, and Molecular Screening Shared Resource in specifically engineered space for low noise and low vibration to house sophisticated equipment such as Scanning Electron Microscope, Transmission Electron Microscope, Scanning Tunneling Microscope, Atomic Force Microscope, and eBeam Writer. The labs and equipment will be available to corporate and academic partners.
I have to give a gentle tease regarding the “Electron Imaging Center of Nanomachines”. Will they only image nanomachines there? I’m guessing that word is there for marketing reasons. If so, we’re glad it has such a positive connotation. [UPDATE: It’s actually the Electron Imaging Center for NanoMachines, and they will indeed be imaging “molecules, materials and molecular machines”. But we’re still glad that nanomachines are viewed as such a key target.]

If you donate enough to get naming rights for the building, but prefer to avoid the limelight, feel free to name it the Peterson Building. Er, I mean, the Foresight Nanotech Building. On second thought, just donate the funds to Foresight! —Christine
