Delft writes "NEW YORK – The Kavli Foundation and Delft University of Technology today announced the creation of the Kavli Institute of NanoScience Delft. This Institute is among nine new scientific research institutes at leading universities to address major challenges in the fields of cosmology, nanoscience and neuroscience. Of these nine, the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft is the first Kavli Institute outside the United States."
NANOSCIENCE IN DELFT
The mission of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft is to advance research on nanoscience, aiming at fundamental breakthoughs and novel concepts. Its research is primarily focused on the physics of nanostructures with emphasis on electronc transport phenomena in individual objects. The nanostructures vary from superconductors to biopolymers and are obtained from nature or fabricated with bottom-up methods (starting with atoms or molecules) or top-down techniques (such as electron-beam lithography). Experiments aim to explore new physics and to exploit novel principles in devices with a new functionality. In the past, groups participating in the Institute have been among the first to explore quantum point contacts, single-electron turnstiles and to measure the conductance of single carbon nanotubes. At this time the research groups at the Institute are led by Gerrit Bauer (theory), Cees Dekker (molecular biophysics, carbon nanotubes), Teun Klapwijk (physics of nano-electronic devices), Leo Kouwenhoven (quantum computation with semiconducting nanocircuits), Hans Mooij (quantum computation with superconducting nanocircuits), Yuli Nazarov (theory), Henny Zandbergen (high-resolution electron microscopy). Hans Mooij will serve as first director of the newly established Kavli Institute.
GRAND CHALLENGES AT THE NEW INSTITUTE
The Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft will perform research on nanoscience in an increasingly wider circle of attention around the current focus on nanoelectronics. The Institute is particularly interested in expanding the interfaces with chemistry and biology. Its 'Grand Challenges' at this time are:
- Understanding the protein nanomachinery in cell and exploring the coupling of biological systems to solid-state information processing;
- Molecular electronics;
- Quantum information processing.
