Join us tomorrow Thursday September 24 at 11 AM PT, 20:00 CEST – for an exploration of those institutions that seem to be able to endure through civilizational collapse with Foresight’s Research Fellow in Political Science, Samo Burja.
Societies and civilizations decline and fall long before most expect them to. We can identify at least 12 distinct Dark Ages only in our recorded history. When civilizations fall, they usually take almost all of the institutions that buttressed them down too. Yet, some individual institutions manage not only to survive one societal collapse, but multiple ones, and even prosper throughout centuries of historical change and upheaval that decimated the societies around them. Three categories of long-lived institutions are particularly interesting for those seeking to preserve or advance knowledge: monasteries, universities, and libraries.
