This month, we talkĀ toĀ David Pearce, a thought leader who is always pushingĀ the boundaries of human potential. Pearce, a philosopher and bioethicist, is best known for his advocacy of transhumanism ā the movement that seeks to enhance human capabilities through technology. We’ll explore his ideas on overcoming aging, achieving radical life extension, embracing cognitive enhancement, and ending all suffering. Join us as we unpack the ethics and possibilities of the future, and discover Pearce’s vision for a world where humanity transcends its biological limitations.

Join our BCI and WBE for Safe AI Workshop May 21-22, Berkeley, to explore how WBE & BCI could be sped up to produce a differential tech development re-ordering to lessen the risk of unaligned AGI.
Ā
Attend the AGI Workshop, May 14-15, SF. Topics include: AI infosecurity, scaling security, privacy in AI evaluation, game theory for multi-agent systems, anti-collusion, & principal-agent problems in multipolar settings.
Ā
PIBBSS is a research initiative aiming to leverage insights on the parallels between intelligent behavior in natural and artificial systems towards progress on important questions about future artificial systems.
Ā
This supports OpenMined’s PySyft, a privacy-preserving AI infrastructure for collaboration on AI safety research among AI labs and research organizations.

This project proposes a new brain modeling method. Instead of tackling the full complexity, it models brain development from a single cell, leveraging known developmental rules. Once a basic simulated brain is built, advanced techniques would refine it to match a specific brain. A virtual test case will demonstrate the approach’s feasibility.
This research focuses on testing AI systems to identify security weaknesses and establish “scaling laws” for AI security. These laws will help determine how much effort attackers need to compromise AI systems of different sizes and training methods. This will improve current AI security practices and guide development of future defenses against sophisticated threats.

Sruthi Sivakumar is chairing the Gordon Research Seminar – Systems Aging 2024 in Barcelona. This is an international conference open for studentsĀ and trainees to present their unpublished work, connect with mentors, and network to learn career paths. This is the first GRS in “Systems Aging” topic, and the second time GRC in this topic (first time happened in May 2022 in Maine).
ATHENA: Women in Technical AI Alignment Research.
Hosted by our 2024 Fellow Claire Short ā congratulations, Claire! Niamh Peren was delighted to attend, and we look forward to seeing where the attendees go!
Other Fellows in attendance included Nora Amann and Lewis Hammond.
Roman Bauer recently published on radiotherapy cancer treatment modeling in Nature Communications Medicine. He was also interviewed about this topic, and on his research on neural self-organization in the retina was published.
Sumner Norman: Neurotech for mental health. He discusses the transition from outdated chemical imbalance theories to specific circuits/systems thinking, before diving in to Ultrasonic brain-machine interfaces and how they offer promise of revolutionizing treatment.
Jules Hedges on Compositional Game Theory: Towards Incentives Modelling at Scale. This approach to modelling interactions of strategic agents is inherently scalable. Here, we discuss what it looks like, and some applications.Ā
Jeff Sebo | Investigating Digital Minds. A philosopher and professor at NYU, Jeff discusses the consciousness, sentience, agency, and moral and legal status of invertebrates and future AI systems.Ā
Calen Ryan | DNA Methylation and Aging in the CALERIE Trials. Columbia researcher Calen Ryan explores DNA methylation (aging measure) in the CALERIE trials – the first to study caloric restriction’s impact on human aging.
Apply to Summer of Protocols
Summer of Protocols, a research program focusing on protocol studies, has opened applications for its 2024 cohort. They offer full-time grants for teams refining existing protocols.
