Toby Ord, Future of Humanity Institute, and Allison Duettmann, Foresight, will be giving the opening keynotes of the XHope Program, February 25, Online.
EXISTENTIAL RISK, EXISTENTIAL HOPE
The Precipice: Existential Risk and The Future of Humanity
Toby Ord is a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at Oxford University. His work focuses on the big picture questions facing humanity. What are the most important issues of our time? How can we best address them? His current research is on the long term future of humanity, and the risks which threaten to destroy our entire potential. We encourage you to read his recently published book, The Precipice, which explores these topics and concludes that safeguarding our future is among the most pressing and neglected issues we face. Toby co-wrote the paper that introduced the concept of Existential Hope.
Existential Hope: Coordinating Towards Flourishing Futures
Allison Duettmann is the president of Foresight Institute, and leads the strategy groups on biotechnology, nanotechnology, and computer science. She created existentialhope.com, co-edited the book Artificial Superintelligence: Coordination & Strategy with Roman Yampolskyi, and is currently collaborating on a book on Intelligent Voluntary Cooperation with Christine Peterson, and Mark S. Miller.
The Existential Hope group is a virtual community of scientists, innovators, scholars, philosophers, activists, artists, and more – who collaborate on seeking crucial opportunities for humanity to steer towards flourishing futures.
Group participants can find each other, exchange opportunities to collaborate, submit topics for exploration to the group, propose and organize discussions.
Regular group meetings are every fourth Thursday of the month, plus bonus meetings, plus monthly Foresight-wide socials in gather.town.

They argue that unless our current understanding of physics is wrong in fairly fundamental ways, there exists an upper limit of value relevant to our decisions.
An article by Foresight Fellow Primavera De Filippi, and Foresight friend and Collaborator Jessy Kate Schingler.
Extitutional theory is an emerging field of scholarship that provides a set of conceptual tools to describe and analyze the underlying social dynamics of a variety of social arrangements, such as communities, companies, organizations, or any other types of institutions.
This is a new concept, please send us your questions and feedback.
Foresight 2021 Fellow Phoebe Tickell launched “Tools for the Regenerative Renaissance” a 6-week course to help onboard civil society onto open-source, decentralized platforms and practices – scholarships available.
The course is meant for those interested in connecting the dots between regenerative food systems, regenerative education, new money systems, collective and cooperative business models, radically distributed governance, and the power of community and collective imagination.
