UVa MRSEC & Paladin Pictures Recognized for Nanotechnology Education Video.
Charlottesville, Virginia – March 1, 2005 – The University of Virginia's Center for Nanoscopic Materials Design and Paladin Pictures, Inc. have received The Communicator Awards' Award of Distinction for their creation of a video program entitled The NANO Revolution. UVa's Center for Nanscopic Materials Design is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored Materials Research Science & Engineering Center (MRSEC). The NANO Revolution is a seven-minute educational video, filmed primarily in the research labs of the UVa MRSEC and designed to introduce the concept of nanotechnology and its applications to a target audience of middle- and high-school students and the general public. The Communicator Awards is an annual, international competition honoring excellence in visual communications. The Award of Distinction formally recognizes the UVa MRSEC/Paladin Pictures production for exceeding industry standards.
More… The NANO Revolution provides viewers with an introduction to the concept of nanotechnology and its potential for shaping the future. As MRSEC Director and UVa Professor Robert Hull explains in the video, "Nanotechnology is the field of designing and engineering structures at close to the atomic-scale. The range of possibilities this enables – from electronics to communications, aerospace, medicine, energy, construction, and chemical processing – is almost limitless." The atomic-scale associated with nanotechnology is incredibly small. Consider that a nanometer is just one-billionth of a meter, or roughly 100,000 times thinner than the width of a single human hair. The program shows how concepts once restricted to science-fiction are now becoming engineering possibilities as the result of developments utilizing this new technology. The video highlights rapid developments within industries such as desktop computers, consumer electronics, and textiles & clothing as examples of the growing impact of nanotechnology upon every-day life.
The NANO Revolution video is a product of the Education & Outreach programs of UVa?s NSF-sponsored MRSEC, which are dedicated to informing and inspiring tomorrow's scientists through work with K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as members of the general public. Research programs within the UVa MRSEC focus on the study of atomic-scale phenomena for applications in fields such as information storage, energy production, and medicine.
