JOIN US IN REVIEWING 2020 CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES AND IN UNVEILING OUR 2021 PROGRAM IN BIOTECH & HEALTH, MOLECULAR MACHINES, INTELLIGENT COOPERATION, AND EXISTENTIAL HOPE
WHAT TO EXPECT
We invite our Senior Associates, Patrons, and Sponsors to join Foresight’s virtual member gathering, Dec 12, 11 am – 12.30 pm PST. Connect with other members, strategy group keynotes, senior fellows, and 2020 fellows, to take stock of challenges and highlights this year, and launch our 2021 groups. After introductions, we invite you into different nooks of the virtual Foresight HQ so you have ample opportunity to meet fellows, prize winners, strategy group keynotes, and members to share in 2020 successes and kick-off our 2021 program.
HOW TO JOIN
Receive your invitation to the member gathering and join our community to collaborate on accelerating futures as extraordinary as you dare envision them.
As Senior Associate, you support the work of our public group on Existential Hope and are invited to join the kick-off and monthly keynote meetings of this group in 2021. As a Patron or Sponsor, you support the project generation of our private groups on Biotech & Health, Molecular Machines and Intelligent Cooperation, and are invited to join the kick-off and monthly keynote meetings of these groups in 2021. Become or renew your annual contributions — debit/credit, crypto, wire, check — on our donations & membership page. We will reach out to you with your invitation to the gathering upon the receipt of the donation.
We can’t wait for what we will build together in 2021.
FORESIGHT PRIZES & AWARDS
Meet the winners of the 2020 Foresight Institute Feynman Prizes & Distinguished Student Award.
Project Vesta’s plan to make radical progress to heal the planet is to further the science of enhanced weathering and galvanize global deployment of green sand beaches. The non-profit organization exists to prove the science of Coastal Enhanced Weathering (CEW) in an ocean environment, in order to develop CEW as a mature solution for climate change, opening the way for deployment to be scaled for large-scale carbon removal. Once scaled, Project Vesta plans to remove gigatonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year, in a permanent, safe, and cost-effective way. The process captures 20 times more carbon dioxide than the extraction and transportation of the olivine. If deployed on just 2% of global shelf seas, CEW could capture 100% of annual human emissions. As next steps, Project Vesta is beginning their first pilot experiments, with the team arriving onsite this month, and continuing fundraising in order to resource the work being done through beach experiments.
Farm Foresight App, SystemicAgri, delivers affordable and sustainable development strategies for desired time frames to small farmers using the visualization of scenarios and impact assessment. SystemicAgri provides understandable infographics, reports and maps of systemic solutions for ecological regeneration in agricultural landscapes. At least three scenarios are provided, where regionally based good farming practices, return on investment, current and upcoming land use policies and network opportunities among consumers, authorities and producers are included. Ultimately, SystemicAgri empowers generations of farmers both economically and socially and creates better futures.
Fusion is a commercial fusion energy company based in Seattle, WA. It seeks to make fusion energy affordable and fully commercially viable by 2031. Fusion is the process that powers stars. It can provide highly power dense, firm, carbon free electricity or industrial process heat with zero risk of meltdowns, no long-lived waste and only minimal land requirements. To equitably deliver these benefits around the world, CTFusion seeks a broad coalition of investors and supporters from energy and engineering companies, philanthropists, non-profits, and environmental organizations. It is fundraising for its next four year project, a proof of concept machine that will demonstrate the physics necessary for a later net electric pilot plant.
Chris Wilmer & Paul Boon, CO2 Sequestration via Porous Materials
We are working on developing a novel porous material to capture carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere (called direct air capture, or DAC). To return the atmosphere to 350 ppm CO2, we need to remove about 1100 Gt (gigatonnes) CO2 from the atmosphere–more if the world doesn’t very aggressively attempt to eliminate all fossil fuel emissions. The size of the new DAC industry required to accomplish this much CO2 removal will need to be the cumulative scope of the entire petrochemical industry for the last 30 years. By developing materials specifically to optimize DAC, we are hoping to make this enormous undertaking as feasible as possible. Our next step is to computationally analyze the broadest possible range of materials and processes in a search for improved materials.
MEET KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND GROUP MEMBERS OF OUR 2021 STRATEGY GROUPS
To translate the expertise of 10+ years of our technical competitions for advancing biotechnology, nanotechnology, and computer science into consistent long-term progress, in 2021 we grow the one-off competitions into continuous strategy groups. Invited participants in the groups include leading scientists, entrepreneurs and institutional allies across the world, as well as Foresight fellows and supporters. Each group is connected by a virtual community and meets monthly online to focus on advancing a crucial aspect of their field, prompted by invited keynote speakers. The goal is to develop concrete approaches for making progress on these aspects and to cooperate on realizing them.
Existential Hope Group
This group of scientists, philosophers, and activists educates explores crucial macro challenges for humanity and high-impact STEM areas to solve them.
Biotechnology & Health Group
This group, sponsored by 100 Plus Capital, consists of biotechnology experts and investors who cooperate on advancing foundational progress on preventative and rejuvenative technologies to guarantee long healthy lives for humans.
Molecular Machines Group
This group of nanotechnology-focused scientists cooperates to spur long-term progress on molecular machines by advancing the work of selected Foresight Feynman Prize winners, and those likely to win in the future, to create atomically precise applications in energy, medicine, and materials science.
Intelligent Cooperation Group
This group of experts in computer science, cryptography, AI and related fields focuses on advancing applications that increase cooperation among human and emerging intelligences and defend against future automated digital and physical threats.
To get a glimpse of the community, take a look at previous member gatherings below. While we won’t be physically close this year, the digital switch is more than making up for it by expanding our community to aligned minds across the globe who you’ll meet in funkily designed virtual spaces.
